Narva 1.0

I traveled 2.5 hours by train from Tallinn to Narva today, the 3rd largest city and easternmost point in Estonia. It sits on the west bank of the Narva River, which flows north to the Gulf of Finland.

The cold didn’t stop people from getting out!

The imposing Ivangorod Fortress sits across the river. It was built in 1492 and is in present day Russia.

That’s right—RUSSIA! I was standing on the edge of freedom!

I could literally see Russia across the Narva River! Eat THAT, Sarah Palin! 😝

It was an oddly terrifying and yet thrilling experience. I was of course safe but felt anxious, knowing that Putin’s Russia was right there!! 😳

I cautiously gazed across a river at a completely different world. I stood in awe at the intersection between the free world and Russia.

Estonia and Russia, so close and so different!
